Sodoma
Frescoes from the 16th century

The biggest place of interest in Sant'Anna in Camprena is the old dining room, completely decorated with frescoes of the famous Italian renaissance master Giovanni Antonio Bazzi ( Vercelli 1477 – Siena 1549). The artist, better known as Sodoma , painted the scenes between 1503 and 1505 . He was inspired by Leonardo da Vinci. In the old Tuscan family houses, churches and monasteries, you can find other hidden works of this master.

The six panels in the dining room of Sant'Anna in Camprena tell the story of Christ and Maria. They represent the biblical miracle of the multiplication of the bread. ‘La Pietà' grieves over her son Jezus' crucifixion. In the multiplication of the bread, the painter lets the spectator enjoy the vast landscapes as if it were a snapshot of the city of Perugia . Important is that also Sant'Anna, the mother of the Virgin Mary and the woman after whom the monastery was named, can be admired on the frescoes.

The art of Sodoma has influenced a lot of painters from the school of Siena after him. His work still inspires the many artists who annually seek the quiet and beauty of the monastery.
